How to Get Rid of Bad Dog Breath – Some Solutions to Fight Foul Breath

If your dog has terrible breath, you are not alone.

After all, a lot of dogs drink out of the toilet, nose through the trash, and eat things that are simply unmentionable. Even if your dog doesn’t have some of these disgusting habits, it’s not uncommon for their breath to be unpleasant because they’re probably not brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash on a daily basis like humans do.

When the foul odors become too much of a problem, there are some solutions, and on this page we will give you some tips on how to get rid of bad dog breath.

How to Get Rid of Bad Dog Breath – Veterinary Checkups and Dental Care

Dogs need REGULAR dental care too.

Some veterinarians recommend that you brush your dog’s teeth every day. This is not realistic for a lot of people but you should brush your dog’s teeth occasionally. If you’re unable to do it yourself, you can bring your dog to the veterinarian and have them do it, although this will be an expensive option.

Even if you do you brush your dog’s teeth yourself, it’s a good idea to take your dog to the vet for a dental checkup once in a while just to make sure they don’t have any problems that need to be addressed. Bad breath can sometimes come from tooth decay, gingivitis, or some other issue that will require a veterinarians assistance.

Bad breath can also be caused by some type of gastrointestinal issue.

So be sure to take your dog to the vet for a checkup from time to time.

Doggie Mints

A lot of people like to use dog mints to help freshen up their dogs breath.

Mints can help but they are only masking the problem and they are not treating the source of the bad breath. If you take your dog to the vet on a regular basis and you know that they don’t have any serious dental issues, doggie mints may help freshen your dog’s breath until you have a chance to brush their teeth or take them in for a cleaning.

Special Dog Food

There are certain types of dog food available at the supermarket that are supposed to help with bad breath.

I know some people who use pedigree brand dog food and they said that it helps quite a bit.

Some people also recommend switching to dry dog food to fight bad breath. I’m not sure that a special type of food or dog biscuit is the best solution however. If bad breath is caused by plaque or tartar build up, eating a crunchy type of food is not going to solve the problem.

Raw Bones

Raw bones will do a better job of removing plaque and tartar than special types of dog food.

Some veterinarians will actually recommend raw bones and suggest giving your dog one or two bones per week. I know people that follow this advice and they say their dogs have great breath and shiny white teeth.

The bones are able to get deep down, between the dogs teeth to help remove plaque and tartar. You can get bones from a butcher shop but make sure the bones are fresh and still have a bit of meat on them. It’s a good idea to keep the bones frozen until you use them so they won’t rot because a rotten bone could make your dog sick.

The Orapup

The Orapup is the doggie version of the Orabrush which is a tongue cleaner.

Many times, bad breath is caused by bacteria build up on the tongue and cleaning the tongue can eliminate bad breath.

The Orapup uses soft plastic bristles, like the bristles of the scrub brushes that surgeons use to get prepared for surgery. The bristles get into the crevices in the uneven surface of the dogs tongue to loosen up bacteria, and then the bacteria is scraped away.

You may be thinking that scraping your dog’s tongue sounds like an impossible task.

The fact is, it’s much easier than you realize.

The Orapup uses a flavored gel applied to the bristles which your dog will happily lick. Because your dog will lick the bristles of the brush, he or she will be doing most of the work for you. There are currently two flavors available, beef and bacon, and the flavored gels are made with all-natural ingredients.

The Orapup has been getting great reviews from customers who have used it with many people saying that their dogs no longer have the nasty breath they had before and their dogs really enjoy using the Orapup, it’s like a treat for them.

If things like brushing your dog’s teeth, giving them raw bones, or using the Orapup don’t work and your dog still has bad breath, make sure you take them to the vet to figure out what is causing the problem.

If you know that your dog is otherwise healthy, try giving some of the above solutions and try and you may be surprised at how easy it is to how to get rid of bad dog breath. Read my full Orapup review, click here.
